* Note: The 169 "original" carburetted CSLs produced in 1971 actually had VINs falling in the 3.0CS VIN range.

BMW assigns a range of VIN#s for production runs. That assignment does not indicate that all of the numbers in that range must be used. It is simply that there is a set aside range of VIN#s for a model during a certain time of production.

For example:

The 1996 publication of the E9 Parts Manual from BMW Mobile Tradition, shows that a range of VIN#s for the European specification 3.0 CS produced up until 12/73 was set aside. The range assigned was 2 210 001 to 2 220 000, or potentially 9999 units. This differs radically from the actual total production range of 2 210 001 to 2 214 006, for a total of 4006 units. For the USA-shipped 2800CS, the parts microfiche indicate that there were 826 units shipped to the USA, the parts manual shows 626, the book "BMW Coupes - A Tradition der Elegance" by Mobile Tradition shows 526. Which is correct? If anyone else knows, please advise. However, suffice it to say, there can't be too many of less than 1000 cars still on the road today.

Sadly, many collector car magazines have based their evaluation of market values of the BMW E9 and its collector car desirability on an incorrect total of units produced. Some "reliable" sources have apparently used the range of numbers set aside, rather than the actual number of units produced. This misperception has resulted in an underrated value for the cars, and an assumption that there were far more units produced. The E9 is far rarer, and there are far fewer BMW E9 cars on the planet than many have assumed have existed for more than two decades.
