Subject: RE: Oil FilterSo there are some benefits to the cumbersome old canister style!I understand the O-ring that originally sealed up the canister/flange joint on the bottom bolt canister used to have a square section. I've only seen round section O-rings for this purpose, which according to some are unreliable. Maximillian refuses to carry the round section, and sez the square section type is not available.
I recently had a round-section ring blow out on a newly purchased coupe, though I suspect it was just poorly installed by the PO.
Was ist die Geschichte?

Subject: Re: Oil FilterI actually compromised and went with the later style canister that used the x bolt from the top to replace my bottom bolt style. Die-cast aluminum canister polished up real spiffy, too.

Lo and behold, my Fram had split too and oil was all behind me. Of course there wasn't time to do anything because the first race was within the hour and my LeMans class winning CSL spent the night at the track. So I thumbed it to the track did my races and returned hours later to claim my CSL of now 28 years.

Subject: Oil FilterSome mechanics and I agree the best way to change the original is to remove the canister bracket from the block, drain the oil and then separate the canister from the bracket. Much easier and cleaner than removing the bottom bolt, especially the reassembly.Richard
Just so. It is a good alternative and I used to do it exactly that way myself what with the gaskets and springs and washers and bolts that had better be reassembled properly or oil starvation might melt down your engine.
Then I located a spin off adapter that was not, at the time, an obscene price for a small metal casting. It was yet another Coupe epiphany among many such joyous discoveries in the last 15 years.
Part of the fun is enjoying the triumphs of the 1970's E9 designers and engineers and finding ways to outwit some of their idiotic creations.
