Thanks, Scott Duval '73 CS - Frances ----- Forwarded by Scott Duval/TrialGraphix on 09/04/2008 09:40 AM ----- "BMW CCA" To sduval@trialgraphix.com 09/03/2008 08:04 cc PM Subject Hilton Head Concour Invitation for BMW's (Sent by BMW CCA on behalf of Dwayne Mosley, President of the Sandlapper Chapter) Hi everyone. I?m Dwayne Mosley, the President of the Sandlapper Chapter in SC. I?m contacting you because the organizers of the Hilton Head Island Concours d? Elegance & Motoring Festival have asked me to contact CCA members to encourage them to attend their event. BMW is a primary sponsor for this event, and HHIC would like to have a few unique BMW?s available for the Saturday Car Club Jamboree. They have asked for these specific types of cars: ? 2000cs, 2002ti, 2002tii, Bavaria, E30-M3, 3.0cs, 635, 840/850, Z8, Alpina, Isetta, M1, M5, Z3 coupes, and a club race car?. If you have members that own one of these cars and think they might be interested in displaying it at this year's HHCI Saturday Jamboree event, please have them contact me at sandlapperbmw@charter.net and I'll help them get in contact with the coordinator of this event. Per Truitt Rabon of HHIC, ?the Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance & Motoring Festival is a 4-day event October 30 - Nov. 2. It starts with track events at Hutchinson Island (across from downtown Savannah) and culminates in Sunday's Concours. Saturday's CCJ is when invited car clubs place their selected member cars on the field, "drivers" not Concours cars, though most of the cars that have exhibited at past CCJ's have been superb. Think about the kind of prep (wash and wax) that you would do for Eurofest. Park your car along with other CCA member?s cars on the show field and have a good time. There are awards for "Best Club", "People?s Choice", "Top 30" (voted on by the CCJ exhibitors), "Kids Award", etc. There is a $30 registration fee for CCJ exhibitors. When registered as one of the 20 BMWCCA CCJ exhibitors, you receive 2 passes for Saturday, 2 passes for Sunday, a gift bag, award potential, and invitations to register for other events (banquet, etc) that are limited to exhibitors and sponsors only. Stay for the Concours on Sunday to round out the weekend. If you have time, come for the Thursday and Friday track exhibitions, hot-laps, autocross, etc. The Concours website www.hhiconcours.com is intended for general information, for spectators to purchase tickets in advance, and for donations to our charities including Driving Young America. The website is not intended for CCJ registration. BMW CCJ registration goes through Dwayne, then Gary. ? I?d appreciate any help you can provide with contacting your membership base. While I have email contact with all the Sandlapper members to provide information about this event, I need your help in contacting members in your chapters to inform them of this event, and to forward them to me if they have one of the requested cars and they?re interested in attending the CCJ. I?ve included several documents that HHIC provided to me and links to more information about the event overall. If there are any questions, please don?t hesitate to contact me. In addition to the Concours, I?ve included more information below the dashed line further describing the events that HHIC is having at the Indy Lights track in Savannah, GA. Clearly there are track and other driving opportunities available during the event. Please share this info with your membership as well. Regards, Dwayne Mosley sandlapperbmw@charter.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hilton Head Concours scheduled for the end of October and early November is planning on utilizing the Indy Lights track that was built on Hutchinson Island in Savannah for this year's track event. On Thursday & Friday (Oct 30 & 31) they are planning "track events" at the Hutchinson Island track across from downtown Savannah - gymkhana, sprints, autocross, perhaps hot laps with factory drivers in Porsche and BMWs. The Car Club Jamboree is on Saturday in Hilton Head. Marsha Everett has spent a lot of time determining what?s required for us to successfully navigate the Hilton Head event this year. Many thanks to her for her effort. As I mentioned, they are very interested in having unique BMW?s attend the event this year. Per Marsha, ?I got my information regarding the Savannah Historics Event for Oct 30, 2008 and Oct 31, 2008 from the following three sources: HSR website www.hsrrace.com Hilton Head concours d?Elegance etc website http://www.hhiconcours.com Meredith Kronz, Administrative Assistant - Hilton Head Concours d?Elegance & Motoring Festival - mkronz@hhiconcours.com (843) 785-7469 - office(843) 290-4565 - cell The Hilton Head / Savannah Historics, hosted at the newly reopened road course on Hutchinson Island, GA, the site of the only Indy Lights Series Dixie Crystals Grand Prix in 1997 won by Helio Castroneves, will open the festivities for the 2008 Hilton Head Island Concours d?Elegance & Motoring Festival. This is listed as a two-day vintage track event, managed by HSR (Historic Sportscar Racing, Ltd.) and will feature historic race car and motorcycle exhibition sessions at speed as well as touring laps, along with hot lap rides in the latest sports car makes and models, autocross, Gymkhana and car club competitions. Parade laps will be available for invited car clubs. To see a complete write up on the events go to: www.hhiconcours.com/index.php?page=historics Parking for the event will be on Hutchinson Island at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center (One International Drive, Savannah, GA) for $5.00 a day. To get directions their website is: www.savtcc.com/site/index/62 General Admission Tickets for the track events can be purchased online prior to Oct. 11, 2008 for $10 a day. After Oct. 10, 2008 tickets are $15 a day online or at the gate the day of the events for the same price. To purchase tickets in advance go to the hhiconcours.com website and select tickets at the top of their screen. I asked if the track had grand stands this year and was told NO. They will have ?designated viewing areas? but it doesn?t sound like they have seating available. Hot Lap, Parade Lap and Touring Lap Information Hot Laps You can ride as a passenger in the latest sports cars with a certified driver at racing speeds $50. Parade Laps You drive your car along with other car club members (as a group) at controlled speeds $15. Touring Laps Are for the general public to drive their cars at controlled speeds around the track. $30. Hot Laps are scheduled on: Oct. 30, 2008 at 11:30 AM and 4:15 PM Oct. 31, 2008 at 2:30 PM. Parade Laps are scheduled each of those days around noon to 12:15PM Tickets for Laps can only be purchased the day of the event and I was told they would have plenty of tickets and plenty of time!? Thanks for the info Eric, It is at (not in) the Car Museum in Saratoga Springs, NY which is way North in the Adirondacks. Apparently it was donated for sale by the Museum to raise funds. Driveability unknown - contact the Museum. One can get to Saratoga via Amtrak from NYC (a cheap $52 r/t) also from Boston or Chicago - all via Albany. And you need not remove your shoes, have your potentially explosive Palmolive confiscated and be groped by ever vigilant security agents, especially if you have a funny accent (NYC, Pittsburgh, Alabama and Texas excluded). As Coupe numbers dwindle almost every day, this seems to have the possibility of preserving so posterity to see what BMW's looked like before the Company decided to concentrate more on speed, geewhiz gadgets (ref: i Drive) and handling rather than aesthetics. Yes, they are a scold and a nag. But for $250. a year I have four of us covered with 100 miles of free towing ANYWHERE, free gas, free locksmith, bail bond, if necessary TWO two trucks, and some misc. perks. For less than a dollar a day the peace of mind is worth it. When they failed to rescue me promptly and I complained, they paid my dues for a year. The NMA makes a great complement to AAA. It didn't turn out so well - but that doesn't mean the new cars we're getting are perfect, either. Here are a few features most don't have - but probably ought to: 1) Warning buzzers for important gauges Most cars have either gauges or warning lights for things like water temperature and oil pressure; few, however, team these important visual shout-outs with auditory ones. Result? It's pretty easy to not notice a sudden drop in oil pressure or spiking water temperature for a few critical moments - by which time severe damage may already have been done. Wouldn't it be nice - wouldn't it be smart - if all important gauges and warning lights were hooked into buzzers that immediately called your attention to a developing problem? That's how it works in airplanes. It ought to work this way in cars, too. 2) Wider-mouthed fill ports for underhood fluids Most cars have a large opening on top of the engine someplace for adding oil; many don't, however, have similarly large openings to feed the car other equally vital fluids, such as automatic transmission fluid. Instead, there's a leeeetle tube with a diameter of about an inch or so that makes having a funnel on hand essential - unless you want half of each quart you're trying to add to end up all over the engine instead of in the transmission. Why not make a transmission filler neck with a wider opening that would make it a snap to just pour in fluid? 3) Flow-through vents in the cabin Cars built before the mid-1970s often came with a system of vents that could be manually opened and closed to allow outside air to flow into the car without any power assist from electric motors. It was a kind of poor man's AC - and actually quite effective at keeping the car's interior cool at highway speeds without having to roll down all the windows and enjoy the hurricane-style crosswinds. But they stopped offering this simple, effective system - and replaced it with ever more complicated "climate control" AC systems. Nothing wrong with AC, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to stay cool without having to use a power-robbing (and gas-sucking) accessory all the time? (And which will still provide some cooling effect in the event the AC system or electric blower motor croaks out on you?) 4) Instant-on supplemental heaters Decades ago, VW offered a supplemental gas-fired heater to warm up the otherwise frigid (and drafty) passenger compartment of the Old Beetle. It didn't work especially well - but the concept was interesting. Instead of using a gas heater, though, why not fit a car with an electrical space heater of some kind that would begin to warm up the car's interior immediately? Wouldn't that be better than having to sit there with your teeth chattering and your digits going numb for the 5-10 minutes it takes for the engine to warm up enough to provide heat? It's an option people who have to suffer through harsh winters would probably be very interested in! 5) Consumer-replaceable body panels The Bricklin SV1 of the '70s and Pontiac Fiero of the '80s pioneered two worthwhile ideas that have disappeared down the rabbit hole: Color-impregnated and "pop on/pop off" body panels that almost anyone could replace after a minor fender-bender accident. The SV1's color impregnated body panels (which were made of composite plastic) never required repainting; if the finish dulled, you just polished the surface - and it looked like new again. The Fiero also had plastic panels that were both flexible and dent-resistant and which could also be easily removed and replaced with basic tools when damaged. In both cases, less work for body shops - which may explain why you can't buy new cars with such features anymore. 6) Small trash receptacles Cupholders are commonplace; but how about a place to put the empties? Most cars don't have a dedicated trash space - so we just toss junk onto the floor, where it rolls around (and sometimes spills). In the '70s and before, in contrast, many cars offered small (and easily removable) trash cans that were nicely fitted to the lower footwell kick panel or some such place. You could put your junk in their - and later on, easily empty the contents. This system helped keep a car's interior clean and tidy - and avoided the disgusting hassle of syrupy spills in the console storage space and loose wrappers stuffed into the glovebox or hiding under the seats. 7) Factory-fitted trickle charger hook-up Batteries are not cheap - and many die prematurely, especially if they're in cars that sit for days or weeks on end without being driven. They gradually lose their charge - because there is always a slight draw of current even when the vehicle is off. Savvy motorists use a trickle charger to keep their vehicle's battery fully charged, automatically, at all times - even if the vehicle is left sitting for months. But you still have to buy the charger - and splice in the hook-up to the battery - on your own. Wouldn't it be nice if the automakers offered new cars with trickle charge hook-up pre-wired? Even better, with a trickle charger system already in place, so all you'd need to do is plug the car in to a household outlet whenever you knew you'd be leaving it unused for more than a couple of days?
