Message-ID: <4665035A3972471184F0BD41194548F7@DGNPHLB1> Just read my copy of latest "Car" magazine from UK . BIG feature covering several BMWs old and so-new-not-yet released . Apparently Der engineers haff decided that on the upcoming 5-series BMW will no longer use Macpherson struts for their front suspension . They are reverting to double wishbones (aluminum )-as used by lots of their highend competition . When Mr McP (a FORD of England engineer I believe ) invented his faster-cheaper-lighter strut cars came equipped with 12 or 13" wheels ...the orig mini had 10" ...so maintaining vibrationless control of small/narrow wheel/brake assemblies was nowhere near as difficult as with todays 20" superwide monsters . When you study the evolution of the Mcp strut from say the Ford Cortina thru BMW 2002 and 320i -a clever design using the swaybar as lower-link locator (but oh so prone to shimmy !) -to the convoluted upper and lower control arms on today's big BMWs they've done a great job with a flimsy concept but its time has come .. Wonder how long it'll be 'til a pair of struts is as obsolete as a pair of dual sidedrafts ? Mercedes must be chuckling ...... The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as 'Euro-English'. In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent 'e' in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
